Toyota Corolla 2002–2007 oil capacity and oil type

How much 5W-30 a 1.8-liter Corolla takes, why Toyota lists both 3.7 L and 4.2 L, and why the XRS is different, with the manual page for every year.

Short answer: every 2002–2007 US Corolla calls for SAE 5W-30. The 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE takes 3.7 L (3.9 US qt) with a new filter according to the 2002, 2003 and 2005 owner's manuals. It takes 4.2 L (4.4 US qt) according to the 2006 and 2007 manuals, and on a 2003–2005 car that has Toyota's revised dipstick. The 2005–2006 Corolla XRS has a different engine, the 2ZZ-GE, and takes 4.4 L.

Owners often find two different numbers for the same engine. Toyota explains why in technical service bulletin T-SB-0134-08, which raised the 1ZZ-FE oil level by 0.5 L and introduced a new dipstick. The table below gives each figure exactly as Toyota prints it, with the page where you can check it yourself.

* For a 2003–2005 Corolla fitted with the revised dipstick from T-SB-0134-08, Toyota's updated figures are 4.2 L (4.4 US qt) with filter and 4.0 L (4.2 US qt) without. See the next section.

The 2005 XRS quart figures are left out of the table on purpose. That manual prints 4.8 and 4.6 US qt, which do not match its own litre values (4.4 L is about 4.65 US qt). The 2006 manual prints 4.7 and 4.4 US qt. Use the litres and finish with the dipstick. We have not reviewed a 2004 owner's manual. The bulletin below does cover 2004 Corolla 1ZZ-FE cars.

Why the manuals say 3.7 L and 4.2 L

Toyota issued T-SB-0134-08, "1ZZ-FE Engine Oil Level Specification Update", on July 15, 2008. It applies to the 2003–2005 Corolla with the 1ZZ-FE engine, and to the 2003–2005 Matrix and 2000–2005 Celica with the same engine. The bulletin:

  • replaces oil level gauge (dipstick) 15301-22030 with 15301-22050, which carries an identification mark;
  • raises the oil capacity by 0.5 L (0.5 US qt);
  • gives new drain-and-refill figures of 4.2 L (4.4 US qt) with filter and 4.0 L (4.2 US qt) without.

The 2006 and 2007 owner's manuals already print 4.2 L and 4.0 L. They also describe a larger gap between the dipstick's low and full marks: 1.5 L, against 1.3 L in the 2002, 2003 and 2005 manuals. The 2002 Corolla is not listed in the bulletin, and its manual figure of 3.7 L stands.

Which number applies to your 2003–2005 car? It depends on the dipstick in the engine, not on the model year alone. Part 15301-22050 has an identification mark that the original 15301-22030 does not. If you can't confirm which one is fitted, work from the dipstick rather than a bottle count. Add about 3.7 L after fitting a new filter, run the engine briefly, switch it off, wait a few minutes, and top up toward the full mark. Don't overfill.

Which oil type: 5W-30, and when 10W-30 is allowed

All five manuals call for SAE 5W-30. The quality grade printed alongside it changes over the years:

  • 2002: API SJ "Energy-Conserving" or ILSAC multigrade oil, with 5W-30 preferred. The viscosity chart also shows 10W-30 for temperatures from about 0 °F (−18 °C) upward (OM12743U, p. 218).
  • 2003 and 2005: API SL "Energy-Conserving" or ILSAC multigrade oil, SAE 5W-30. If 5W-30 is not available, 10W-30 may be used, but it should be replaced with 5W-30 at the next oil change (OM12744U, p. 214; OM12891U, p. 267).
  • 2006 and 2007: ILSAC multigrade oil, SAE 5W-30, with the same 10W-30 stopgap wording (OM12A23U and OM12B07U, p. 265).

Current ILSAC-certified 5W-30 oils succeed the API SJ and SL grades the older manuals name. When you buy oil, check that the bottle shows the ILSAC "starburst" and the 5W-30 viscosity.

The XRS is a different engine

The 2005–2006 Corolla XRS uses the 2ZZ-GE, not the 1ZZ-FE. It takes 4.4 L with filter and 4.2 L without, and its manual lists a dipstick low-to-full range of 1.5 L. If a website gives "4.4 quarts" for an ordinary 2005 Corolla, it has most likely borrowed an XRS figure or mixed up litres and quarts. Don't use XRS numbers for a 1ZZ-FE car.

Oil filter

None of the owner's manuals prints an oil filter part number. The WIX 2021 application catalog lists WIX 51394 / 51394XP for the 1.8 L 1ZZ-FE in these years and WIX 57145 / 57145XP for the 2005–2006 XRS 2ZZ-GE. Confirm the filter against your engine before ordering, and replace the drain-plug washer when the parts counter lists one for your VIN.

Check your exact Corolla

Each link opens the oil-and-filter record for one exact configuration, with the source, page locator and fitment notes:

To compare every recorded configuration, browse the Toyota Corolla model years. The same records also list transmission fluid. The 2002 automatics take DEXRON II/III ATF, the 2003–2007 automatics take Toyota Genuine ATF Type T-IV, and the 5-speed manuals take SAE 75W-90 API GL-4/GL-5 gear oil.

How we checked this

We read each figure from the archived copy of Toyota's US owner's manual for that model year. Page numbers count from the start of the PDF. The 2005 file is printed as form OM12891U, for Corolla production from September 2004. The bulletin's applicability, part numbers and capacities come from an archived reproduction of T-SB-0134-08. We could not find a copy hosted by NHTSA. Where a manual's quart figures disagree with its own litres, we show the litres.
